Drug and Alcohol Testing

Why is screening recommended as a management tool for employee health and safety?

Alcohol and other drugs and widely available in our society. Despite many years of drug and alcohol prevention and treatment campaigns, substance abuse remains a social issue that also affects the workplace.

Which substances can be detected?

In addition to alcohol, screening for the following drugs is typically done in both the U.S. and Canada: marijuana, cocaine; certain opiates (heroin, morphine, codeine, opium and its derivatives); amphetamines; and phencyclidine (PCP).

Specific tests can also detect prescription or over-the-counter medication that reduce mental alertness at work. These types of medications could be subject to a company policy for acceptable use. Whether testing was done for screening, diagnostic, or follow-up purposes, the validity of each specimen must be verified (urine sample dilution and the addition of interfering substances).
